Wing Boarding / Wing Foiling is the hottest new wind sport. It combines a kiteboarding kite-like sail, but is handheld similar to a windsurf sail. It’s essentially a cross between a windsurfing sail and kiteboarding kite but with no rigging, hardware, and strings attached! This makes ‘winging’ a lot easier to learn but still offers riders that awesome free-flight sensation by using a handheld and lightweight wing.

WINGBOARDS FOR GETTING STARTED

If you’re just getting started in wingboarding, then you are going to need a board that is stable and easy to learn on as the sensation of standing on the water and handing a wing can get some getting used to. Entry-level wingboards are wide and long, with a high amount of volume which makes them stable and easy to learn wing boarding. Beginner wingboards also have parallel rails to help track a straighter line while the thick, boxy rails keep your feet out of the water so they’re dry and warm.

Once you’ve learned how to handle the wing on the water, then the natural progression is to foiling. There is a wide range of wingboard shapes and designs on the market that are better suited to what type of wingboard foiling is required, but ultimately they all try to achieve a few key goals which should be considered before buying a wingboard; early take-off (hydrodynamic), smooth glide when flying (aerodynamic), and smooth touchdowns with easy re-launch.

Typically wing-boards for wingfoiling try to be as short as possible (while there are exceptions) to reduce swing weight in the nose and make pumping easier, thick and boxy rails increase volume into a compact size and also have additional features like inserts for footstraps that keep the rider more connected to the board when jumping and pumping.

The last and very important feature to note on a foiling wing board is the type of hydrofoil connection it uses. There are two commonly used foil mount connection types: twin track box mount and tuttle box mount. You need to make sure your board is compatible with your foil, although there are mount adaptors, these can have a negative impact on performance and ultimately your foiling experience.

Which Wing Board Is Best For You?

Wingfoiling is happening and wing board performance levels are rising.

Like every new sport, some riders get it right away, while others struggle. This is much down to choosing the right gear. At Starboard, our goal when developing our Wing board series was to make sure you will enjoy your wing session to the maximum and have the best time on the water.

First, we want entry-level paddle boarders to try this new sport and enjoy wing boarding as much as paddle boarding. So, we developed a Wingboard 4-in-1. This is a multi-purpose board designed for paddle boarding, windsurfing, wing boarding and wing paddling. It has high stability, great glide and speed. With the built-in footstrap inserts, you can easily find the right foot positioning for your fist Wing board sessions.
